Electrodynamic separators with traveling magnetic field (fitted with a linear or cylindrical inductor) are considered. The performance characteristics of such machines are analyzed taking into account the edge effects in a short secondary element. Special attention is paid to the surface effect phenomenon in the secondary element. Investigations showed that the surface effect has an essential influence on the performance of electrodynamic separators with traveling magnetic field, which should be taken into account in selecting the designs and parameters of such separators. The revealed regularities show that separators constructed on the basis of linear induction machines are preferable for separating metalcontaining mixtures with fractions of metal inclusions larger than 40–50 mm in size. As regards separators fitted with rotating cylindrical inductors, it is advisable to use them for separating finefraction mixtures; whereas in processing large fractions of metalcontaining wastes these separators show less efficient performance.
