The article deals with the reception of the works of European female writers by a particular category of modern readers in Russia - the educated women's readership (age boundaries: 18-23). The article analyzes the narrative invariant of the most popular novels among this readership: the «Cinderella story». Retracing the transformations of this plot in the literature of the 19th century, the authors find some changes in the image of the female protagonist and the values being translated by this image. The values presumably tend to agree with the «protestant ethic». Such observations make it possible to «depict» a portrait of the chosen group of modern Russian female readers.
