This article considers methodological and methodical opportunities and limits connected with a use of photos as an empirical object of social research. This paper substantiates an urgency of icon documents application in sociology; in the modern society it is conditioned by wide spreading and development of different visual practices of perception and reflection of social reality, perfection of creative technologies, processing and transmission of photo images of actual culture. The author considers some historical and scientific formation aspects of visual sociology and scientists’ appeal to analysis of photo documents which contain a specific value of social information and heuristicity for formulating of socially-reasoned conclusions. The article characterizes methodological approaches to analysis of photos, describes some methodical strategies of visual researches; their results demonstrate that photos represent social reality (values, norms, rules and etc.) through images in them. This fact is connected with basic opportunities of photo documents use in modern sociology. The limits are expressed in complexity in defining of methodology and methods of research, and also the necessity of research principles (methodical and methodological) triangulation, provided by empiric object of research as photo.
