Abstract

The article analyses the Chinese tradition of snuff vial making, the basic characteristics of how the craftsmen of the Celestial handled material, and the roles of these tiny luxury goods in art exchange between East and West. Using as examples the creativity of the well-known European jewelers - René Lalique, Cartier and Fabergé - the author follows up the specifics of how the European tradition treated this refined exotic object and considers the basic ways of working with the Far Eastern type of the product - from attempts to imitate the form and decor to the use of original Chinese snuff vials and change of their functional role.
