There is a struggle between different concepts of Russia’s historical path in the modern Russian media discourse. The nerve centre of the disputes is the choice of an event that can be considered as the birth of the Russian nation and the state. The practices of constructing the history of Russia as the continuous development of one and the same strong state compete with the practices describing a complex historical process in which one type of statehood was replaced by another: Muscovy, Russian Empire, USSR, Russian Federation as a democratic republic that arose in 1991.
