Abstract
The article considers Russian compound words with the verbal stems yed- (eat), gryz- (gnaw), glod- (nibble), glot- (swallow), zhor- (devour), zob- (peck), khleb- (sup). The study is based on the analysis of lexical items of the Russian language (both standard and colloquial) and its dialects,
as well as of anthroponyms (the studied naming pattern being most used for collective nicknames). The authors analyse the compounds' wordformational and deep syntactic structure. From the onomasiological (motivational) point of view, the authors distinguish between two large groups of compounds: words with direct mode of naming (the meanings of those words belong to the sphere of eating and food), and words with indirect mode of naming (which may designate landscape features, diseases, occupations, etc.) The authors consider the compounds' potential for folk-etymological reinterpretations and, thus, their possible role as a source of ethnolinguistic information. The authors also suggest a motivational interpretation of some “dark” words that follow the studied
pattern (ogloyed ‘idler, loafer', mukhoyedka ‘face', notkoyeda ‘a kind of nail disease').
