Abstract

The article deals with metaphorical words used in scientifi c discourse, specifi cally, on metaphorical terms and non-terminological lexical units in astronomical discourse. The author argues that metaphorical naming in this sphere follows integral metaphorical patterns that help conceptualize
various aspects of astronomical objects. The author distinguishes between anthropomorhic, zoomorphic, and spatial metaphorical patterns that constitute an onomasiological paradigm, showing the specifi city and the variation of the above patterns in astronomical discourse. The basic anthropomorphic metaphor in astronomy is the conceptual metaphor “Universe is a human society” which is represented by conceptual domains “Human as a biological being” and “Human as a social being”. The analogy between the world of humans and the world of stars is maintained by predicates originally designating processes, actions and states of people. The spatial metaphors applied to the universe also mirror the earthly space.
