Abstract

Modern linguistics treats metaphoric modelling of reality as the basic mental activity, the way to structure and explain the world. The article studies how Churchill's metaphor models describe a real war event. In cognitive linguistics metaphoric modelling is a way of reconstruction of the author's mental models of the figurative perception of the world. The hypothesis of the paper is based on the theretical ideas of the Americal historian and literary critic Hayden White who compares the use of tropes in the historical discourse with the embodiment of the author's soul. The historian, according to this concept, is constantly in search for the necessary metaphor and figurative representation of the historical past; the historical narration always contains the elements of interpretation and suggests the structure of the past, which has no structure of its own, and therefore this structure is new in every new text. The article presents the fragments of interpretation of the contexts of metaphor models. The material for research is the memoires of the ex-Prime Minister of Great Britain, the only of the three political leaders of “The Grand Alliance”, whose thoughts were expressed with the help of metaphors; the memoires made the bases for the further Anglo-Saxon historiography of World War II. Contextual metaphorical analysis revealed the dominant metaphor models and their potential in reconstruction of the individual language picture. The interpretation of these language pictures depends on the perception of the dominant models, such as “a Nation/state - a Person”; “a Nation/state - a Criminal/Friend/Alien/Victim”.
