The article is devoted to evaluating the method of virtual modeling used in the study of changing practices of social activities due to proliferating new information technologies. The authors make an attempt to identify a new research technique that allows to build a model of social interaction and provide arguments to whose making decisions, offering satisfactory living conditions for residents and changing the urban environment. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the application of virtual modeling in the study of urban spaces and social participation of citizens by highlighting the opportunities and limitations of this method in interdisciplinary projects. The meta-analysis of current academic publications on the issue in highly rated editions allows to identify four functional meanings of including the analyzed method in urban research projects. In combination with the other research methods, virtual modeling allows us to adequately assess the reaction of citizens to possible changes in the urban environment and to activate different urban communities. The method expands research opportunities in identifying technological and social risks. The method provides variability of analytical capabilities through visualization of the materialized urban environment and social interactions. Virtual modeling helps to create in-depth and complicated information base of research by increasing the participation of citizens, including young people, in urban research. A critical assessment of the analyzed publications leads us to conclusion that social participation is not only a research object of urban projects, but also one of the resources for their implementation by using virtual modeling.
