Abstract
The article summaries the results of theoretical and empirical sociological study of the social work profession development process in modern conditions. The process is analyzed in functionalist’s approach on two levels: institutional and level of interpersonal interaction between social workers and agents of related professions, such as medical, educational workers, lawyers. Two groups of contradictions were determined, based on the analysis of regulatory framework, poll results and interview of social workers, interview of specialists communicating with social workers. The first group of contradictions is related with institutional role of the social work profession in modern society. Others rise from the character (nature) of communication between social workers and related professional agents during the implementation of their occupational roles. The problem of self-sufficiency of social work professional status is stated. These contradictions are considered as factors of the social work development.
