Paper analyses barely investigated phenomenon - reviews on European scientific and theological literature, published in journal “Christian Reading” in 1880-1917. “Christian reading” as a journal of Petersburg Ecclesiastical Academy played an important role in the development of Church scholarship and theology. Church scholarship had to give a response to the challenges of time, one of which was growing European influence, especially in the time of Great Reforms and after. One can choose several blocks of subject: Orthodox relationship with new social and philosophical ideas: utilitarianism, materialism, atheism, socialism, communism; analysis of modern scientists, scholars, writers, philosophers, and theologians; translations of European scholarly and theological works; application of Christianity to modern conditions: connecting modern scientific data and Christian views; answers to fundamental questions (beginning of life; belief and knowledge; Christianity and progress; feminism, etc.); relationship with phenomena imported from abroad (vegetarianism; duels, etc.); contemporary religious life in the West (Catholicism, Old Catholicism, Anglicanism, Lutheranism, American Episcopal Church); union of churches; history of Western religious and philosophical movements (the main confessions, free-masonry); historical events (Christianity and the French Revolution); apologetic papers, written by Europeans who had converted to Orthodoxy. The paper focuses one of the most interesting kinds of such reaction - publication of reviews on the works of Western scholars and theologians. Authors of “Christian Reading” were well familiarized with the most up-to-date European literature. They read it both in native languages and in Russian translations. The paper analyses subjects of reviewed works, influence of different scholar and theological traditions of different countries. The paper shows that these works were not always criticized strongly by Russian intellectuals. Russian prerevolutionary Church scholarship and theology were in the context of European investigations, and polemics took place from scientific and not ideological positions.
