Abstract

The problems of studying iconography of the illuminated manuscripts of Apocalypses touched in the 19th century by F. I. Buslaev, have remained relevant in modern science and are also reflected in the researchers’ works. In the book under review the process of origination and progressive development of the apocalyptic illustration is traced, including questions of the appearance of early pictorial cycles in Russia, the influence of Western European art on the Russian one and the dissemination of Western European engravings of the Apocalypse, as well as the peculiarities of the Russian cultural tradition of illustrating texts. The study of a miniature series in the context of historical development allows concluding about the common roots of Christian art and the interaction between the art of Russia and Western Europe.
