Abstract

Modern extremist discourse uses different technologies of cognitive interpretation, or “reconstruction” of cultural meanings of visual symbols to manipulate, propagate and protect from legal responsibility. During such reconstruction the central point of an image is replaced by something else (some other, often mythological source is put forward). The central point of an image determines its current meaning, if it is changed, a new story is advanced which is often mythological. Such “mythological” connection with the past helps to add the necessary semantic and emotional components to the image, and to emphasize its pragmatic potential remaining legal. Contemporary nationalistic organizations often resort to orthodox of Islamic rhetoric in their propaganda; they exploit religious images. This explains the fact that the technology of sacralization is one of the most wide spread in nationalistic discourse. Its mechanisms are described in this article on the basis of a number of symbols: the images of a wolf and old Russian ornaments. Special attention is given to Svarog’s square, a symbol popular in nationalistic subculture which doesn’t have direct correlation with paganism and in the Old Russian period was not associated with Svarog at all. Manipulative potential of religious symbols is analyzed.
