Abstract
The author discusses the reasons for the demand of the newspaper as a media type at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The e economic factors that had caused its development are specifi ed, formation of the newspaper press system under the infl uence of the government information policy and reader’s audience inquiries is considered. The main typological kinds of newspaper editions of this period are marked out and characterized.
