The article deals with the interaction of plot and space organization in Klaus Mann’s emigration novel The Volcano. The author analyzes how one of the main characters of the novel crosses the symbolic borderline between the world of the dead and that of the living which is connected with crossing a geographical border separating different zones of the exile space. As a result, the character finds a new home on the periphery of this space. For characters of the novel to be able to cross the border, according to the author of the article, there should happen an event of “border crossing”.
