Abstract

The article interprets several poems by the Israeli poet Dan Pagis, which are thematically related to his memories of the Jewish Holocaust. Pagis’ lyrical character is a witness of the events of that time. But in order to really witness, he has to look at the events from the point of those who did not manage to survive. Hence the antinomic duality of the character’s position: he is alive, and he is among the dead; he is saved, and at the same time it is impossible to save him. The main problem of the article is the impossibility (or rather, the «impossible possibility ») of his salvation.
