The emergence in the modern political history of Russia new subjects - regions - has created the need for their positioning. The original was the strategy of identification with the historical capitals - Moscow and St. Petersburg that generated the key meanings the ‘third capital' in the regional media discourse. The key meanings ‘Ekaterinburg is the third capital' reflect different models of image of the territory in the Federal and regional discourses. Inner image of Yekaterinburg in the regional mass media aimed to identify the city as the ‘third capital' into the minds of external and local audience. The goal of the Federal media discourse is to broadcast to the electorate the image of Russian megalopolis outside the key meaning of ‘third capital'.
