The article examines discursive concept of identity, and outlines the prospects for discursive approaches application to sociological study of religious identity in Orthodox parishes. Analyzing the theoretical provisions of discursive approach to identity, the author gives special attention to the following aspects: discursive submission and mechanisms of identity formation in discourse, the role of subjectivity in this process, incompleteness of the identification process. The author argues that in religious discourse power is executed through the sacralization of religious doctrine, through communication and rituals, as well as through the procedures of selecting participants and through the forms of social appropriation of religious knowledge. Significant psychological needs also facilitate the individual’s integration into religious discourse: the need for ontological security, the need to realize the meaning of the life, and the need to cope with the fear of death. Moreover, in modern societies religious identities are uncomplete. Instability of religious identities is caused by the secularization of society, the competition of secular and religious discourses.
