Resumen
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, there have been some contradictory trends in Central Asia: the ongoing complex process of constructing state identity and national states and their legitimization, on the one hand, and, on the other, the process of regional construction shaped by intra-regional challenges and the influence of external actors. The ‘Samarkand consensus’ reached in 2017 intensifi ed the initiative of the five Central Asian states to create a regional bloc. In 2019, the European Union adopted a new strategy for Central Asia. All of the above signifi es integration projects and overlapping regionalism in Central Asia. The article discusses the initiatives and the role of the European Union in the region-building of the Central Asian space.
