The article aims to study the evolution of design and artistic culture in the context of design communication through tactile and physical properties of an object. The authors pay attention to the genetic relation between the tactile, sensorimotor level and the environmental, spatial, kinesthetic one in the design and perception of design objects. The article considers such elements in tactile design as material, texture, shape, sensory image, tactile language, tactile information, usability, the naturalness of interaction. The purpose of the article is to find out the current form of design practice (what really matters nowadays). Other goals of the research include the identification of the role of tactility in communicational experience of design, the assessment of the perception of tactility in the context of changed technologies, the description of new requirements for contemporary design. Tactility as an object of design is investigated in terms of changing cultural epochs: modernism, postmodernism, metamodernism. Tactility uses many opportunities for perceptual influence on consumers, including interactivity. The authors describe opportunities of tactile design and point out the criteria of the performance of design projects with tactile features during the period of metamodernism. Tactility makes communicative experience more emotional and richer, really “vital” and bright. That is why tactility makes design much more efficient and high-quality.
