Resumo

The article aims at exploring how the representations of the Soviet space were formed in the 1920s and how they were replaced in the 1930s by the Stalinist spatial mythology. The notion of social space helps us to connect spatial representations and social processes that occurred in that period. It is demonstrated that in the course of the 1920s the spatial representations were successively affected first by the idea of the world revolution and later by national policies and economic zoning projects. It is also shown how industrialization policies engendered administrative utopia of mastering the space. The difference between this administrative utopia and Stalinist spatial mythology is highlighted. The main features of Soviet spatial mythology in the mid-1930s are described. The symbolic role of maps is emphasized, because maps conveyed not merely visual but verbal information and appealed to temporal rather than spatial imagination.
