Blockchain is a distributed database that maintains an ever-growing list of records protected from tampering and revision thanks to algorithmic procedures. The blockchain technology is a relevant research topic lately, a total of 9006 scientific publications are listed in the Elibrary scientific citation database. At the same time, the main areas of research for the application of this technology are economics and financial calculations. The theoretical aspects of the use of blockchain technology in agriculture remain insufficiently studied, since only 1.1% of all economic publications concern the economics of agriculture. Analyzed domestic sources and outlined the prospects for the development of agriculture based on the blockchain technology, including in the context of its main areas of application: customs administration, improvement of financial instruments, logistics, legal support, quality management, government subsidies, investment, export, planning and forecasting. Scientific hypotheses are formulated regarding the economic effects of the use of the technology under study. According to researchers, the use of this technology will help avoid risks and ensure the safety of working with pre-orders, improve the organization of supply chains in the agri-food market, and reduce transaction costs. The use of the blockchain will help simplify the procedures for veterinary and phytosanitary certification, develop the market for organic products, ensure awareness of the place of origin of the goods, and prevent product falsification. There are opportunities to ensure transparency of business processes for potential investors. This will ultimately allow stimulating the export of domestic agricultural products and increase the objectivity of consumer demand assessment.
