Resumo

A set of scientific-research works was carried out by the staff of Nizhny Tagil Iron and Steel Works together with the leading research teams of Ural Metal Institute, Metallurgy Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Ural Federal University. This research work broadened the theoretical bases of vanadium titanomagnetites processing. It was possible to reach the productive capacity of more than 3,0 t/m3 for blast furnaces, which is the best figure in Russia. The relative consumptions of the total fuel rate and of the total fuel carbon are also among the best in Russia. The authors established the working conditions for blast furnaces under which carbide forming processes develop much more slowly. Steps were implemented which ensure that the cast iron founded has low content of silicon and titanium. The major of these steps are: the maximum forcing of the furnace; increasing pressure under the furnace mouth; oxygen enrichment; increasing the rate of filtration through the coke packing due to the optimization of coke properties and to increasing coke strength under reaction. The introduction of blast-furnace smelting technology with the use of staflux and with pulverized coal injection made it possible to lower the total fuel carbon consumption to 418 kilograms for a ton of cast iron.
