The article analyzes the local supertext with the topical focus on Vietnam. In November 2017, there were two major events related to Vietnam which received extensive coverage in the Russian media. The first event was the typhoon “Damrey” in Vietnam which struck central Vietnam on November 4; then, it was followed by a political event - the 25th Anniversary Summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) held in the Vietnamese city of Da Nang on November 5-12, 2017. The aim of the paper is to analyze how the reflection of such events in mass media can contribute to the accumulation of knowledge about Vietnam. The local supertext, a set of utterances and texts limited by time frames, is formed as a semantic unity of text fragments about a selected object and is fixed in the reader's linguistic consciousness as a holistic image of a place having a significant impact on its perception. Important breaking news events actualize the reality within the framework of the local supertext and reinforce the intensity of the information presentation about Vietnam. The image of Vietnam has a multifaceted collective character. The local text facilitates obtaining information about the culture, history, economy, political structure, and national peculiarities of the country. Journalists acquaint the reader with the toponymy of the country, introducing the difficult-to-pronounce names of the cities and provinces into the geographic frame. They form the visual portrait of Vietnam with blue skies, bright sun, sandy beaches, rich tropical vegetation, and with possible natural disasters of destructive nature. Throughout the “Vietnamese” text, a positive modality with respect to the central unit of the text is observed.
