The article contains two brief notes on how different aspects of one phenomenon in agricultural practice are interpreted in the Russian dialects and culture: abundant harvest and excessive growth of plants. The first part of the article is devoted to one of the ways to ensure a good harvest with the help of verbal magic - pronouncing short sentences when planting vegetable crops; the second considers the lexemes that indicate too active plant growth. The aim is to reconstruct the motivations of some verbal formulas and lexemes (in connection with those pragmatic attitudes that determine their use) - and thereby contribute to the reconstruction of the complex of folk ideas about vegetation and harvest. The material is limited to the territory of the Russian North and includes mainly unpublished field materials obtained during the Toponymic expedition of the Ural University in the Vologda, Kostroma and Arkhangelsk regions. The data of dialect dictionaries and folklore-ethnographic sources on the territory of The Russian North are also used; in rare cases, language facts recorded in other zones are given for comparison.
