摘要
In the study the idea of understanding of the Russian painting of the 19th century as an artistic text of the culture of the time, is substantiated based on examples found in the works of I. N. Kramskoy. It also proves that the semiotic approach allows us to take into consideration the dominant values of the culture of the 19th century as expressed in his paintings and make comparisons with the texts of the authors of literary creations.
